CVE-2024-53150
Linux Kernel Out-of-Bounds Read Vulnerability
Linux Kernel
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ALSA: usb-audio: Fix out of bounds reads when finding clock sources The current USB-audio driver code doesn't check bLength of each descriptor at traversing for clock descriptors. That is, when a device provides a bogus descriptor with a shorter bLength, the driver might hit out-of-bounds reads. For addressing it, this patch adds sanity checks to the validator functions for the clock descriptor traversal. When the descriptor length is shorter than expected, it's skipped in the loop. For the clock source and clock multiplier descriptors, we can just check bLength against the sizeof() of each descriptor type. OTOH, the clock selector descriptor of UAC2 and UAC3 has an array of bNrInPins elements and two more fields at its tail, hence those have to be checked in addition to the sizeof() check.
Exploitation status
CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities
Listed by CISA on 9 April 2025. US federal agencies were required to remediate it by 30 April 2025.
EPSS — exploitation probability
FIRST puts the probability of exploitation activity in the next 30 days at 1.4%, which is higher than 70.7% of all scored vulnerabilities. EPSS is a forecast of activity, not a measure of severity, and it is rescored daily.

How severe is CVE-2024-53150?
CVE-2024-53150 is rated HIGH with a CVSS base score of 7.1. EPSS puts the probability of exploitation in the next 30 days at 1.4%, higher than 70.7% of all scored vulnerabilities. It is listed in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, with a federal remediation deadline of 30 April 2025.
How should organisations respond to CVE-2024-53150?
Apply the vendor patch for Linux Kernel as the first priority, and treat any internet-facing instance as the most urgent. Because this vulnerability is associated with ransomware activity, also review whether the affected systems were reachable before patching, rather than assuming that patching alone closes the incident.
